Writing fiction is completely different but, after being inspired by living on the Atlantic coast of SW France, I decided to write a mystery of the kind that I had loved as a child. “The Famous Five” by Enid Blyton was extremely influential but obviously written in a completely different era and so the social values expressed in the novels were no longer relevant to the twenty first century. The plots, however, were exciting and the sense of freedom experienced by Julian, Dick, Anne, George and her dog Timmy is something that modern children can only dream of. I decided to place my mystery in SW France and bring the story up to date by using various references to modern fictional style including the merging of two related stories from different time periods. In this case the current period and the period of the French revolution. “The Orion Ghost” is my first story for 9 – 12 year old children.

In the third novel the French characters come to England to stay in Aunt Izzy’s rambling house and studio in the countryside north of London. The only problem with this derelict house is its name – The Plague House. Aunt Izzy hopes to change the name to something more jolly, but I might not let her! This novel is at the ideas stage as I write in spring 2014. This means that I have no idea where the plot will take me but, at least I have a setting and from that much of the story will spring.
